baby calypso

Melissa, the sweet mother of beautiful baby Calypso, contacted me this weekend for photos through the ACPCG (American Child Photographers Charity Guild). I made my way to Riley Children's Hospital to meet with the family yesterday afternoon.

Calypso was born premature and her kidneys are not functioning. I have such a weak spot when it comes to children so being there was definitely not an easy task. I am so glad I had the opportunity to photograph her though. Being in the NICU surrounded by babies all fighting for their lives is an unreal experience.

Below I've posted my favorites from our short visit. I hope everyone reading this and viewing Calypso's photos will keep her in their thoughts!

All my best to you and your family, Melissa! Looking forward to updates with good news.

UPDATE: Beautiful Baby Calypso passed away on 7-7-07. Please continue to keep her family in your thoughts. <3

Awesome pictures!
Yeah, I had a NICU rotation in nursing school and my mom has been a NICU nurse for most of her 37 years as a nurse. It's sad. What's worse than this is when the parents due ot to the children by using drugs, smoking or drinking alcohol. A lot of my mom's patients (the babies) are there to go through withdrawal. :-(
What's going on with baby Calypso's ears? I haven't seen that before. Are they just swollen or get folded over in the womb?

Nicole - I, too, think what you do for these families and tiny children is just amazing. You captured this fragile time with such gentle understanding and insight. I was touched this evening reading your words and viewing these images - thank you for the inspiration as a photographer and my thoughts go out to baby Calypso and mother.

Again I want to say thank you ... Calypso lost her fight July 7th 2007 (7-7-07) ... I know Melissa and Joe will cherish these photos of their Beautiful Angel forever.

I am sorry your angel passed. My son Logan was a stillborn at 29 weeks 2 days May 28th, 2005, My daughter Cheyenne was born April 7th, 2007 at 32 weeks 4 days, she weighed 3lbs 12oz. Your notes inspired me and I am offering support in anyway, you are in my prayers. Your photography is beautiful. I know how it feels to be a mother of a preemie. Spending alot of time wondering if your baby will be alright. Once again I am sorry for your loss.
